Jackson hurried, taking a quick bite of his sandwich before setting it down again.
Mary, kind as ever, had made it for him just across the street, in the saloon. His favorite, the one she always got just right.
But today, he wouldn’t have time to finish it. The mayor of Strawberry was waiting.
There was talk of a large order, something important, tied to Blackwater. Business had been growing restless lately. Demand for wood from the west kept rising, climbing higher than Jackson could manage. And yet, the men were disappearing. One by one.
No one said it plainly, but everyone knew.
Now the logging had been forced back to the main camp, closer, safer, they said. If such a word still meant anything out there. It slowed everything down. It wasn’t enough. It would never be enough.
From the kitchen, Mary could hear the voices. Sharp, tense, cutting through the quiet afternoon. Jackson and the mayor were arguing. Not loudly, not at first, but with the kind of weight that bends the air around it.
She stopped what she was doing. Something wasn’t right.
Then, all at once, silence fell. A moment later, the back door slammed. Jackson stormed out and headed straight for the woods, needing air, needing distance, needing a moment away from it all.
It’s been weeks now. No one has seen Jackson since. And still, the orders remained. Wood that needed cutting. Deals that needed honoring.
Soon enough, someone else would come to take his place.
